BIONIC PANCREAS AND THEIR EFFICACY IN CONTROL OF BLOOD SUGARS
By Dr. Radha Unnikrishnan, Diabetologist at Silverline Hospital| 0 Comments

The Bionic Pancreas is the latest concept in the list of devices used in controlling blood sugars. It is a system which has been recreated to closely resemble the function of the human pancreas as humanly possible. The clinical trials of this system are in its final stages and the patent of the device is being processed.

Trials have been done with Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes patients who are domiciliary and allowed to pursue their routine activities including diet and exercises. It has been proven in these clinical trials that there was better control of blood sugar levels including lower incidence of low sugars or hypoglycemia. Type 1 diabetic patients usually have many episodes of hypoglycemia especially at night time, making them less confident of taking higher doses of insulin. There was ease of use too as the bionic pancreas did not require carbohydrate counting.

How does it work?
Coming to the system and how it works - The device consists of a smartphone ( i phone 4 S) which communicates wirelessly with two pumps delivering Insulin and Glucagon alternatively and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). Every 5 minutes, the smartphone receives a reading from the CGM which is used to calculate and deliver the required dose of insulin or glucagon. Insulin is given when there is raised blood glucose levels and Glucagon is given in lowered blood sugars and helps in bringing up the glucose levels.
It was also noted that system allows the user to enter the caloric information of an upcoming meal into the smartphone app, so that a pre-required dose of insulin may be delivered via the pump. In case the blood glucose levels drop too low or if one the monitors get disconnected for more than 15 minutes an alert was given so as to right the mistake.

So right now the medical world is awaiting the release of Bionic Pancreas which may go a long way in the management of Diabetes especially Type 1 Diabetes.
