By Dr. Tom Babu, MD, DNB( Endo)| 0 Comments

World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and World Health Organization (WHO). This day is committed to diabetes awareness campaigns around the world with a participation of more than 160 countries. In 2018, World Diabetes Day is celebrated on Wednesday 14th November. The main purpose of this one day is to lift awareness of a chronic condition that affects millions of people all around the world. As announced by the IDF, the theme for World Diabetes Day this and next year is “The Family and Diabetes”. IDF has planned a two-year campaign for this theme considering the importance of the role of family in the education, prevention, treatment and care of diabetes. Presently more than 425 million people are living with diabetes worldwide. Majority of them are type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable through lifestyle modifications like daily physical activity, balanced diet, and adapting healthy living environments. Families have a very important part in addressing the modifiable risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

Since all families are likely affected by diabetes, there is an indispensable need to educate them on the risk factors and clinical features of diabetes for early detection to avoid complications. Diabetes can push families into economic constraints. Sometimes the cost involved in the monitoring and management of diabetes can gobble up a third to half of a family’s income. There is a compelling need to improve affordable access to antidiabetic care and medications to avoid the economic burden on family. Researchers show meaningful evidences that family support in diabetes care can ameliorate health outcomes in people with diabetes. It is crucial that diabetes education and support must be provided t not only to all people with diabetes but also their families to promote better quality of life.
