Dr. Ranjith Sukumar completed his undergraduate training and post graduate training at JIPMER Pondicherry which is counted as one of the best medical schools in the country. After obtaining his masters he completed 3 year Senior Residency in General surgery at JIPMER, Pondicherry. He was deeply involved in research projects and teaching programmes at the institute during this period. His research thesis was adjudged as best research work in clinical category and was awarded by JIPMER scientific society in 2003. He underwent a formal training in medical education in 2005. He was keenly interested in thyroid surgery which motivated him to take a formal training in Endocrine surgery. He was selected for the endocrine surgery training programme in 2006 (for one of the only two positions which were available in the entire country at that time). He completed his post doctorate (MCH) in Endocrine Surgery in 2009 from the prestigious Sanjay Gandhi Institute of post graduate medical education and research (SGPGI), Lucknow and has been working as a medical teacher and consultant endocrine surgeon since. He has been in the forefront of research in the field of thyroid and endocrine surgery and has developed his own technique of parathyroid dissection to reduce hypocalcemia during thyroid surgery. This technique was presented and well received at International surgical Society meet at Helsinki 2013. He has completed over 1000 thyroidectomies and over 50 adrenal surgeries and 40 odd parathyroid surgeries. He was awarded FRCS by Royal College of surgeons Glasgow in 2014 for his contributions towards endocrine surgery. He has given lectures at various national and international forums. He is considered an authority in thyroid diseases in the state. He is currently working as Associate Professor of Endocrine surgery at MES medical College and Consultant Endocrine Surgeon at Silverline Hospital, Kochi. His areas of Interest are Thyroid diseases especially thyroid cancer, parathyroid diseases and adrenal tumors.
