How Obesity Impacts Sexual Health

Medically reviewed by: Dr. Tom Babu, Consultant Diabetologist & Endocrinologist - Written by Riya Yacob - Updated on 21/11/2024

Obesity is more than just a cosmetic concern! It is a complex disease affecting many people worldwide. Obesity is a major health concern that also increases the risk of diseases including hypertension, osteoarthritis, diabetes, heart disease, etc. It also increases the chances of breast and colon cancers.

There is also another side effect of obesity that goes without getting noticed or discussed - obesity and sexual health. In this blog, we will discuss how obesity impacts sexual health.

Obesity - A Major Concern

As already mentioned above it is more than a cosmetic concern. Obesity is a chronic health condition caused by excessive body fat accumulation. Having a body mass index (BMI) over 25 is considered overweight, and having a BMI over 30 is considered obese.

Earlier obesity was only in developed countries, but nowadays developing countries also have a high number of obese people. Overweight and obesity are prevalent worldwide.

The causes of obesity are unhealthy diet, sleep deprivation, genetic predisposition, lack of physical activity, hypertension, poor nutrition, and health conditions like hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, as well as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The impact of this condition extends beyond physical health, also affecting mental well-being.

Obesity poses many chronic health diseases. From hypertension, osteoarthritis, type-2 diabetes, increased chances of heart disease, strokes, and sexual issues to higher risks of breast, colon, kidney, and pancreatic cancers, the list of health diseases linked with obesity goes on. Sleep apnea, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are also major concerns.

Low self-esteem, negative body image, and decreased confidence can lead to intimacy avoidance and relationship strain. There are also chances of mental issues like depression. These can also cause anxiety, and exacerbate emotional distress that may lead to communication breakdowns and conflict.

Remember, most of these health risks develop even when an individual is overweight. These conditions gradually get serious as the BMI increases.

Obesity and Sexual Health

Poor sexual health is one of the major conditions associated with obesity. It can affect the sexual health of both obese women and men.

When it comes to obesity in women, infertility and difficulty in conception are the commonly faced issues linked to sexual health. Studies also point out that obesity in teenagers may cause puberty in girls earlier. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), reduced lubrication, and painful sex are also common concerns linked to obesity and sexual health. Hormonal imbalances and decreased estrogen levels contribute to vaginal dryness and pelvic floor dysfunction. Obesity-related infertility and menstrual irregularities add to the emotional burden.

The levels of testosterone, a primary male hormone, will be low in obese men. Testosterone is responsible for bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass, regulating sex drive (libido), and sperm production in men. Obesity causes a reduction in testosterone in men. The reduced sperm motility and low sperm counts lead to male infertility.

Obesity and sexual health increase the risk of various sexual health issues. Erectile dysfunction, low libido, difficulty achieving orgasm, and painful intercourse are also some of the commonly faced problems caused by obese people. Reduced blood flow, hormone imbalances, nerve damage, and decreased sensitivity contribute are what cause these issues. Joint problems and reduced mobility can also make the sexual activity of obese people more challenging.

How to Prevent Obesity?

Though not all, most of the factors leading to obesity can be prevented. The major cause of obesity is due to high-calorie consumption and lack of physical activity. A healthy lifestyle protects you from many health conditions and helps in your physical and mental well-being. Include a balanced diet rich in whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. Try to limit processed foods, sugary items, as well as soda consumption. Adults should engage in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on a daily basis.
